Desafio

lapalmalogo1.jpg

I’m on the canarian island of La Palma for a photo shooting with the Gin Team. Our second goal is to get some flights for the Desafio competition which will have its final during 1st to 9th of december this year. Unfortunatly we didn’t had so many flying days till now, so the distances we flew where not so impresive.

The Desafio is a XC competition with gave its highest price money in paragliding history. The last edition was ruled by Christian Maurer; second place took my team colegue Charles Cazaux. We will see who will win this year.

The Isla of La Palma offers also nice oportunities to survive non flying days during the winter in Europe. It’s not far away and it’s possible to get cheap plane tickets to here. Weather is mostly warm and good to fly from September till May. If you come here, you will have the possibility to see spectacular vulkanos  and panoramas. If you prefer you can fly as well along the clifs. Oficial landing is close to the beach in Puerto Naos, which is also a good place to spend time for not flying friends. Other activities are possible as well like hiking, montain biking, diving.. Come and see!

World Championship in Leonardo

Killarney

logo.pngYesterday and today I got the pleasure to visit Wendy and Andrew. Thus house is on the top of Killarney take off. Is peaceful and relaxing place to stay and live. They showed me around but I was too short time there to fly. I believe it is a great place for competitions and I hope I will come back for one of Kallarney Classic’s. If you want to visit that place for flying you will find whole information here.

Now I went to the coast to try suringf and maybe flying…

Day 13 - Last task for Worlds 2007

Today in the morning there were low clouds above Manilla. But we new above them is sun and we will fly today.
At 12 o’clock we got breafing on the take off and 12:40 window was opened. I didn’t hurry. After so much rain cloud base was still low and lifts weak. I took off around 13:20 straight in to the lift and climbed to the cloud. We started in to direction start gate. We didn’t found any lift. I was very low and than much lower. I thought “looks like I will do my first bomb out”. Just above the ground I hit strong broken thermal and was back in game. Since then I watched altitude very carefuly. I get some group in front and we flew slowly forwards. Lifts where very weak and lot of shadows. We fighted till sun comes back. We worked out the altitude. I couldn’t get to the cloud base.
One part of my group which left was low above the ground and second high above me. I made crazy decision and flew further to direction goal. I got no sink so it was quit good but the terrain was getting higher. I found thermal but wind was strong in there so it was difficult to centrate this up wind. One blue boomerang Sport came to me but I lost the thermal in this moment and he was higher then me very fast. I couldnt find the thermal and wind was too strong to fly back to look for, so I flew further. 8km to goal was end of my flight. I landed in the middle of the farm far away from the road and houses. I walked 30 minutes till I got to the houses. Unfortunately there was no body in there only sweat dogs and some other animals. I went to the road. It was far away. I get to there very tired. After some minutes came my guys to pick me up.
In HC I heard that there have been 2 womans in goal - Ania Kroll and Viv (AUS). Marina, Harmony and some others have been too short before goal.
That’s not too good for me. We’ll see in some minutes how are the results.

So we have Results:

1. Bruce Goldsmith
2. Jean-Marc Caron
3. Thomas McCaune

7. Krzysztof Ziolkowski
59. Klaudia Bulgakow
61. Pawel Faron

Kobiety:
1. Petra Slivova
2. Viv Willians
3. Harmony Gaw

5. Klaudia Bulgakow

9. Poland

So that’s it. We got nice after party and now for some of us time to go home I go to explore Australia. See you soon!

Day 12 - rain

Day 11 - 4th task - 60,8 km

Morning breafing didn’t brougth good news about weather, but organiser’s still hope so next breafing was shift on 11, now again on 12.

It was decided we go to the take off.

So we got 4 task - 60,8 km with take of on Mt. Borah and goal in Baan Baa. We got 5 times of start gates. On begining the conditions wasn’t good so I was waiting with start. In the moment when I wanted pull my wing up I saw green Boomerang 5 with some Advance wing falling down in rotation. I couldn’t move! I stay with open mouth and look up.
Finally boomerang separated and advance drop rescue. UFFF! I took of. Just under the take off was one more wing in the trees - an orange U3. It wasn’t a nice beginning. I found nice thermal when I heard below of me woman skream. I looked down and I saw there 2 more gliders on the ground. I looked around luckyly I was the highest, so no one could fly in to me. I tried to relax and forget what I saw. Just fly. It wasn’t easy.
First groups which started the race were very low. I decided to do first maximal altitude then go. When I looked up I saw Chrigel and big part of Swiss team. Probably they plan the same. We started together. On beginning was very good but on the right side developed small thunderstorm and put big shadow on the task route. Even it started to rain under this cloud. I decided to go left to avoid it. I saw some of the pilots under this cloud having good lift but it was too far and too stupid in my opinion. I decided to fly on the board of shadow some of pilots got the same idea so it wasn’t bad.
I wouldn’t be alone. Unfortunately the shadow came before us so we needed fly in weak thermals and soom we got nothing. Some of my group decided to cross the mountain. I was too low for it so I decided to fly around. Finally sun comes but there was no thermals any more. We landed all together on kilometer 29. 5 womans in one field. Harmony from New Zealand who is on 2nd position landed with me as well. She told me: “So we lost our leading today!” I don’t care today for my results. I’m happy I wasn’t one of this pilots who crashed today. I think I saw Petra landing on kilometer 20. I’m so sorry for her. Whole of us wish she win this championship.

In the HC I was told that first pilot with rescue was Caroline Bril from France. She landed soft on the hill. Only her glider is littl damaged. Two other pilots were a South American girl, she went to hospital, and my friend Renata Kuhnova. Luckily she is ok. What looks dangerous finished fine. What a luck.
Now we need to wait for the results.
