Paragliding World Cup – mean changes

Are you shocked way I didn’t went for PWC in Brazil? Asking your self if I losing by chants for the World Cup Champion title this year? Did I decided to stop competing?

There is the answer: I didn’t went cause new World Cup format aloud this, without losing chants to win Champion title. Answer for third question – not this year.

For thus who know nothing about changes and followed PWC in Brazil it could be a little confusing. A spatially discards in event.
I decided to luck thou rule book for season 2009 and explain here the mean changes.
During season 2007 and 2008 it was discussed a lot about changing of the format of the event. 80% of pilots voted for new format.
New format looks as followed: 5 continental events and one Superfinal.

This year selection events will be:
Paragliding World Cup - America
- Governador Valadares, Brazil / 21 - 28 March
Paragliding World Cup - Asia and Oceania
- Mun Gyeong, Korea / 25 April - 2 May
Paragliding World Cup - Europe
- Denizli, Turkey / 30 may - 6 june
- Talloires-Lac d’Annecy, France / 13 - 20 june
- Buzet, Croatia / 11 - 18 july
And the SUPER FINAL
-Poggio Bustone & Cornizzolo, Italy / 1 - 12 september 2009

For each event of Continental round 125 pilots will be selected out of PWC selection list. Selection for stay as before. Minimum 10% of places are reserved for female pilots. For the Superfinal goes 100 top male pilots of each continental event and enlist 10 best woman.

“The overall result of each pilot is calculated with his/her best scores. Discards are used to
encourage individual tactics and improve overall safety of the competition. It allows pilots to
give up when encountering unsafe situations as their overall result will not be affected.”

During each event after 3 task will be one discard. If there will be 3 or more task, tasks with les then 1000 points will be discarded. Only on last day there will be no discard. So par example if there where only 1 or 2 task whole of them are valid for overall scoring. If 3 task where flown, one of them will be discarded and 2 are valid for overall. If there where 4 task and whole of them where 1000 points task, 3 task will be valid for overall. But if whole task aren’t 1000 point’s task then only 2 task are valid for overall. And so on.
Number of task during Superfinal after 3 task will be one discard, after 6 task - 2 discards. There will be no discard on last 2 days.

During continental tours there will be continental champions awarded. This year it will be Winner of America, Azia World Cup, European champion will be selected out of sum of the best 2 scores in European events.

As I said on the beginning 100 top male pilot and 10 female pilots enter Superfinal. It will be top 110 pilots of the year and legends (world Cup winners, World Champion, Continental Champions ever) wonting to attend. Theoretically top 20 pilots of each event are qualified for super final. But how it will look in praxis? Some event will be the same pilots in top 20, so next pilot from the list will attend too. Because not each event will have the same good weather and pilots level this will be evaluated by “pilots quality” and “flying quality”.
Quick selection, to make it more fast and more exciting PWC comity decided to select immediately top 15 male and 3 top female (if in top 80 overall) pilots of each selection event. This rule is valid for flying quality 1. If flying quality is not 1 then top 5 male and 1 top female pilot is immediately selected.

How the quality will be calculated:
• Pilots quality :
The pilots quality is based on the top 30 “highest ranked” competing pilots in the competition.
It will be calculated with the PWC Ranking. For the 1st 2009 event, the first PWC ranking is
based on the 2008 World Cup result.
• Flying quality :
The flying quality is not calculated through number of tasks but through the sum of the
winners points. With at least 2000 pts, flying quality = 1 (full value)
Under 2000 pts, flying quality is decreasing of 1% per 100 pts (eg : sum of winners pts =
1600; Flying quality = 0.96)
• Comp quality :
Pilots quality and Flying quality = Comp quality.

We have interesting World Cup season in front of us. How new format will work? We shall see soon.
Only one problem I see is that on one side discards will bring a lot of safety in to the event, but on other hand new format with new rules is difficult to understand for media and not insiders. I believe some pilot’s don’t really understand this needier.
Many things are still not clear. Hopefully if will be certificate soon.
